How would you place furniture in this family room?

Where would you put a nice big TV in this room? I'm debating between diagonally in one of the left corners, or flat against the bottom wall.

Obviously there would be a full sized couch against the right wall, but where would you put a love seat or perhaps some chairs, etc? Any ideas?

Its nice to have the fireplace as the focus point of the room, but there has to be a TV somewhere

I would not put a full-size couch against the right wall... I would put the couch out in the middle of the room (perpendicular to the fireplace), with a loveseat across from it, and maybe an armchair next to the loveseat. Then I'd put the TV on the wall where you were going to originally put the couch, and put like, big plants or something on either side of it to break up that huge wall.

You'll also want to get sofa tables to put behind the two couches so they don't look adrift in the room.

hmmm...i hear what you are saying. but i'm not sure if the room is big enough for that sort of layout. Good idea though, its got me thinking.

If it's a flat panel.... I'd say above the fireplace depending on the height, or straight across from the fireplace.

If the TV can't be hung on the wall, then I'd say diagonally in the corner between the fireplace and the window. That way you could include the window and the fireplace in your living room setup and have room for a secondary part near the bottom wall.

The problem with my suggestion is that I'm telling you to put the TV directly across from the fireplace, which will create a huge amount of glare during the winter when you have the fireplace lit.

CCanizz's suggestion is much better, actually. 15x12 is a decent-sized room... you could probably definitely put the TV in a corner, nestle some furniture around it and then have like a little 2-chair table in the opposite corner with a nice flower arrangement on it for visual interest.

Okay here's what you do. I'm such a dork that I did this myself but I have no way to show you.

Get an 8.5x11" sheet of paper and a ruler with centimeters on it. Draw a 12x15 room, using the scale of 1 cm=1 foot. I drew your window to be in the center of the room, and 4 feet wide, and your fireplace to be center of the room, 5 feet wide. I have no idea what the actual measurement is. Also be sure to draw a doorway with 3 feet of clearance around the door.

The standard large sofa size is 96x40, or 8x3.5 feet. The standard loveseat size is 5x3 feet. So on a separate piece of paper, draw a little loveseat and sofa to scale, and then cut those out. Also draw two sofa tables, one at 4x1, and the other at 6x1. An end table should be about 2 feet square or round, and a coffee table about 4x2 feet. Also make a cutout of your TV (I figured it was 50 inches, so I basically made a little 4x1 foot cutout).

THEN... just move those around in your little drawing of the room, and you can see what will work! Make sure you always have at least 1.5 feet between pieces of furniture that you'll need to walk around (i.e. the sofa tables and end table can be right up against the sofas but the coffee table needs clearance on either side).

dude, thats way out of proportion... (in that diagram) the room is only 12 feet wide.

i would put the TV diagonally in the bottom left corner.. it seems like the only reasonable spot. and then put the two couches perp. to each other. the longer couch against the right wall, and the love seat going across the middle of the room. and place it about two third of the way back towards the window, so it is not too far from the TV.

^ that way the couches form an L shape facing a diagonal TV. and you will also have the comfort of the fireplace right there, running parallel to the larger couch, which makes sense.

its funny that im writing this b/c at the same time im working out a furniture layout plan for an office suite im designing.

the better question is, how large is the TV? the tv in the diagram above looks like a 19", im sure yours would be more like twice that

Here I am! Unfortunately I'm terrible at this shit! The way the room is set up, you are going to get glare on your TV no matter what you do unless you get really dark blinds. Our family room is like that too. We have the TV in the bottom left corner, the 3 seater couch against the wall opposite the fireplace, a single reclining leather chair to the right of the couch in the top right corner, and another single chair in the top left corner.

Oh yeah, and don't get a love seat. I think 2 separate chairs are a better idea for a room like this. It leaves you with more options and more space. Don't have a coffee table. Only have side tables near the couch.

Well if it's a BIG room, then for sure put a coffee table. But if it's a small room it will eat up all the walking space

. Especially if it's in the cross-line between the couch and the TV, it will look like a big distraction that serves no real purpose. Honestly, when you're watching TV, you should aim for a CLEAR view, and keep the clutter to the edges of the room. If you put a small table (or even better, a commode), in between the couch and the single chair and stick a lamp on it, you'll have a far more functional thing.
