Garage Door Spring

My garage door is messed up. My house was built in 2001. It is a two bay garage with a single door. There is a long rod with a spring that goes across the top of the garage. The bar has drums on either end and cable raps around each drum. The cables then attache to the bottom of each side of the door. One cable came off throwing the door out of sync. I had to remove the cable on the otherside to get the door to shut.

I don't want to mess with the spring as I have been told it is dangerous. Upon trying to get someone to fix it he quoted me $590! He said that homebuilders use the cheapest of materials when it comes to garages and he wanted to replace damn near everything but the door. He also said that I only have one spring and I should have two.

Has anyone else had door problems? I want to have a garage door opener installed but I have to get the door fixed first. I need from yall!

Thanks!

A) don't mess with the spring. it IS dangerous. i've done accident reconstruction cases t work involving people damn near killing themselves trying to "fix" the spring.

B) a lot of doors have 2 springs. it depends on the weight of the door and how much HP your garage door opener will have. The only point of the spring is to make the door require less force to open, therefore a popwerful opener can compensate.

I had my door/opener replaced by a company called The Overhead Door Company. I think they may be national. They did a good job. $900 for a single car garage door/opener and keypad on the outside of the garage. The door is almost silent too.

My door was knocked out of alignment during the hurricanes last year. I needed a new spring. I got it replaced for $250. That included the spring and the install fee.

Let the pros handle this.

A co-worker I used to park next to had a nicee ~1999 Accord.

One day I noticed his passenger side front fender was mangled, along with parts of the hood. Dents about 1/2"-3/4" deep. I asked him what happened.

His garage door spring broke and caused the damage. Thankfully, no one was in the garage when it happened.

Let the pros do this one. These things CAN KILL YOU.

I've had a spring replaced about 6 years ago and it was sub $300...

You $590 bid is way too high IMO.

Does the spring mechanism look like this?

This is a Wayne Daulton door, sold at Lowe's. I had this door on my old place. Yes, there is only one spring. The spring is inside this bar that sits above the door, bolted to the header.

The wire ropes are wound on each side and the spring causes them to coil up and down.

If this is what you have, go to a Lowe's and ask for a handyman that installs them. They should be able to fix it pretty easily, and cheaply.

Sounds about right to me. $200-300 tops.

OK, so I dragged my lawnmower through the house on a cardboard box this weekend because I couldn't stand going any longer without cutting my grass. While cutting my grass I bumped into my neighbor. I told him about my garage door spring and he said it would be easy to fix and that he had done it before.

As nervous as I was, he walked me through the steps of fixing it and I tightened the spring, rerouted the cables, and my garage door works again. I really do think I would like to get a second spring because my garage door is insulated and should actually have two springs. Now I have to decide if I have the guts to tackle a full spring install myself.
