self-cleaning ovens
my oven has the self clean function. what is the right way of using it? i turned it on earlier using the default time and it turned out to be 4 hrs and 20 mins...
![]() i left it on for about 30 mins and the apt is full of smoke and smelt like shit. what's the procedure of using it? or should i just say fuck it and buy a bottle of oven cleaner cuz it'll save me more money in electricity? thanks

It does take a long time (around 3-4hrs) for self-cleaning to run a full cycle.
If your oven is really dirty use the self cleaner. If it's mildly dirty, clean it with easy-off, etc. You will have "smoke" or the smell of burning...this is normal. If you have chrome racks in the oven the chrome finish will dull if you leave them in the oven during the cleaning cycle. It will not harm the racks, just the finish. If you don't care if your oven racks are shiny or not, leave them in the oven. |

Doesn't a self cleaning oven simply get very, very hot and burn everything inside to a crisp? That's what I do to clean my grill before I use it. It smokes like crazy but the residue is very easy to scrape off.

Hence the smoke. It's not the safest bet either, IMHO. I would just warm the oven to 250 F, place a pan of water inside...let it boil for 30 minutes, turn OFF the oven. Open it, spray with easy off, close immediately & let sit overnight. That should do it. All the gooky shit should wipe right out. |

I use my method. Call Mexican cleaning girl. Pay her $80, she cleans the entire place. I never rag on the hard working Mexicans. I love them to death.

Perhaps... She brought her younger sister to help her and the sister was pretty cute and about 18-20? Hey, I can be crude here but I'm actually nice in person and wouldn't do that in person. Although I can maybe ask her out and then have sex with her when she comes over like on Seinfeld. "Hey, what did I just pay for?"

I've had bad experiences with them. Our current oven has gone through 3 new motherboards. It locks itself automatically and then cleans the oven. Will not shut off no matter what we do. Just let it do it's thing. We were cooking thanksgiving dinner one time when it happened.
Let's just say the oven is possessed and we dont use the cleaning function ![]() |
