Homeowners Insurance

I need to start looking for a policy, can anyone suggest anything?

I already called State Farm (whom I have my car, renter's, and some person property items through) but they are not writing anymore policies in FL, great huh!

I just wrote an email to some agent with Allstate, but is there anyone else? I know if I can not find anyone I have to get Citizens but their rates are the most expensive.

Typically how much is insurance anyways?

Thanks

When we were looking I called:

State Farm
AllState
Nationwide
Geico
Farmers
Metlife

Called all of them before we moved, got prices for the house and the cars (to get multipolicy discounts), and ended up going with Nationwide as they were the cheapest and also offered one of the best coverages... plus the agent ended up living in my community!! So he's accessible should anything happen, which is a plus.

Expensive though and are better at covering $$$ items, like estates, boats and mansions.

will probably end up with MetLife they seem decent and I got 1000 dollar deductibles for everything and it wasn't much more. State Farm and Allstate are not writing new policies for FL anymore. I really did not see many options and would rather just get it over with.

FL is near impossible to get coverage. i just bought and was stuck with Citizens. By law they must insure you if you are refused by anyone else. They also by law may be the most expensive carrier in that situation. I have like $100,000 coverage for like $2200/yr.

Here's a tip. Lender sometimes don't require you to insure the full value of the house. You can insure the loan amount only. If you have an appraisal you can insure the cost new. You can also insure the appraised value minus the land. Sometimes this gives you less coverage to pay for. But remember this is your benefit amount and if should you need to claim your policy you'll only get that much.

Update

I actually found a policy with State Farm, originally when I contacted them they thought I was still in S. FL so they said they do not write new policies, but then I called back saying I was in Orlando and they said they could still write. So I ended up with a good policy, full coverage, 2% hurricane deductible, some other stupid perks and more of a multi-line discount cause we have our auto through them as well.

Total=$960 a year wooooot

Read over the policy carefully, we deal with insurance and a no one really reads over their policies so when there is a claim they don't know what's covered, whats not covered, how much their deductable is. Also, check to make sure who the payor of the policy is, don't want to miss a payment because someone setup the wrong thing. Also, if you find an independent insurance agent they should be able to find better rates in the future if you're ever looking.

you don't have to ensure the entire purchase price, specifically the land, because that will not be destroyed likely. I have 150k coverage for $250/yr.
