Wall Touch Up

Has anyone successfully touched up their walls and been able to match it? I used the leftover paint and it looks way different after it dried What am I doing wrong?

Depends how long you had the leftover paint. I used off-white for my interior and tan for the exterior and didn't have any problem reusing leftover paint within 1 year. I'm sure certain paints oxidize or degrade to some extent over time affecting color. The flipside is that the paint on your wall changes color over time, especially with UV exposure or if you live close to the ocean as with my home. I will usually chip a small paint flake off with a sharp blade and take it to the paint store. This provides the most accurate match IMO.

^Great advice....So if I really chip off a piece, you think they can match it up pretty well?

Yeah, at Home Depot they have some scanning device connected to a computer. The computer algorithm directs the appropriate mixing of the paint.

I've had pretty good luck with painting smaller areas several years after the paint was first applied. Like svt said, make sure you mix up the paint really well and paint a bigger patch.

If it is a wall that gets a lot of light, then take it piece down to the paint store. They will be able to get you a pretty solid match. Like rick said

Surprised you didn't just buy a new house.

I agree with the paint chip. But you're going to have to feather the edges of the touch up.

For sho. I may even do a little fine sanding at the edges for a better blend between the new and old paint.

It depends on the sheen of the paint. Anything with a sheen, when touched up, you will be able to notice it. I don't know how to 'get around it' other then repainting that entire wall.

How big does the paint chip sample need to be?

I thought I did, but I will for the next batch.

Im highly considering it. I did sand the edges though.

This is a big difference, the old painted wall is much darker and not as yellow as the touch up spots.

Thanks all. My project for today is here.

Whiskers it's not going to be a perfect match. To the untrained eye, it might be good enough, but for you, it most likely will not be good enough. I have had to repaint entire sections of walls to get the paint to "match", or at least blend in with the surrounding paint. What I mean is, if the object we say, a square column, I would paint the entire side of the column that needed it, floor to ceiling. You can't notice a difference between each side, and you have better coverage.

Hey, didn't you once use brush paint on a car in England??!

Good luck on the touch-up, but it may still be noticeable unless done per Gatr's post. It may be OK if the color is a flat color and the old paint is fairly new.

LOL. Whiskers, what you need is Tim Tebow sperm, that way the walls won't chip.

Step 1: Make sure you are using the correct paint.
Step 2: Repeat step one.
