I personally am not a LG fan.

My preference

in order: Sony, Panasonic, Samung and Toshiba.

My next TV is going to be a plasma, either sammy or panny.

 

i was watching transformers 2 on the 55" samsung led at fry's. the picture looked friggin amazing. it didn't have the matte look like seinfeld, it looked more "live" like a soap opera i guess. sorry for that bad explanation. i don't know what the terms are for the film types.

i'm getting transformers 2 through netflix tomorrow so i can compare it to my 50" panasonic plasma. i'm really curious to see how they compare and how much of it was the disc or tv. i've just never seen a panel with the "live" type of look which was impressive, although i'm sure it's probably not that accurate in terms of color.

 

Thats probably cause the tv had 120hz set on high. It should still look amazing on your tv.

Yeah that's something LCD's are known for with their 120/240hz processing. Like you said, it makes it seem like a soap opera. As dom mentioned, it should really only be used for sports, or very fast action content.

 

what's the deal with the led tv or 120/240hz processing tv's making the picture look live or like a soap opera. is this considered better or worse than a regular picture or is it one of those divided camp love it or hate it things?

i watched transformers 2 on BD on my 2-year old 50" panasonic plasma to compare it to the $4000 samsung 240hz led tv i saw at frys (see my above post). the disc at fry's was playing at 60hz, the salesman was showing it to another guy so i confirmed this through the on-screen prompt. the picture was way better on the samsung than my old tv. there was way more detail with the same blacks. i read that the viewing angles aren't as good on the leds though.

the picture on the samsung popped more which is kind of cool although i also read that the picture pop is not very accurate in terms of picture reprodution.

 

yea it does look pretty cool, but yes its less accurate color reproduction. I am big fan of the panasonic plasmas. They are great tvs and look amazing.

 

I'm going to be getting my parents a TV for Christmas. The only retail around me is either Sears or BB and I refuse to give BB my money for any purchase this large. So that pretty much leaves online dealers.

So where would you all consider getting a TV from now days? I'm not so much concerned about business reputation as I consider myself sufficiently versed in who's decent to deal with. That said, I've never purchased a TV via mail order before so I'm concerned about the TV being shipped properly and arriving in one piece. 2-3 years ago when I was shopping for myself I recall seeing vendors that would put tilt and/or drop indicators on the boxes, delivery services that would power the TV on before leaving, and so forth. I'm not really seeing any of that sort of thing mentioned now.

-TV will probably be a 46" LCD
-Parents live nearby so I can probably be present at delivery

 

I've heard good things about Amazon.


Sounds like I should get a job at Best Buy.
One of my buds got a seasonal job for the holidays there, and he said they can purchase almost anything they want at cost. Not that it's really a surprise, but those flat panels have ree-donkulous markup. Almost twice as much as cost in some cases.

question about ordering from amazon, does it come with the regular manufacturers warranty?
how long is it?



only reason i ask is because my dad when he ordered his 43" pioneer plasma a few years back online, many of them came with no warranty for some reason. so

 

ahh i figured it out, its because the places my dad looked at weren't authorized dealers.

so if i buy from amazon they should be authorized dealers right?

 

Yep. Buy a Panasonic through Amazon, register it, and Panasonic will warranty the TV for you.
