CHEAP+SOME WHAT Luxury (leather seats)+Great MPG= Acura RSX. Type-S or non either way great on gas, black leather, pretty quick... and looks good too. IMO RSX sums up everything you're looking for.

I've been thinking about these. Found a white (my favorite) 2001 with Nav, 127K miles for $6995....$5500 I'd take it, $7K is a little high IMO..unless the car is like new. I might look at it. It will definitely need a timing belt right away though.

I thought OP already had a 04RL. From the 1G RL sign-in thread

I moved from a 2000 RL to 02 RL, if you are looking at 01, I would suggest trying a 02 RL. There were several improvements introduced with 02RL it feels significantly different from 99-01 RLs. There were suspension upgrades, engine upgrades, wider tires, etc

I would suggest 97-01 Lexus ES300. You can probably find one within your budget. They seem very reliable. Don't know about gas mileage though.

I would recommend spending an extra 3K more and getting something a bit better than a G20. The G20 is very slow and boring, in my opinion.

Also note that a 4 cylinder won't always get better gas mileage than a 6 cylinder motor. I had an '09 Accord Sedan, and my '06 TL would get consistently better gas mileage than the Accord. It's the driving style the factors into the gas mileage. The Accord lacked the low end grunt and as a result required more throttle, whereas the TL didn't require much throttle.

says the guy who puts electrical tape on his headlights

to OP, look at older consumer report reliability ratings. the last thing you want is to have a seriously depreciated, and delapidated car when the majority of the cars use will be @ ~70 mph.

priority one: used & reliable = japanese - mazda, mistu, infiniti, lexus, acura

priority two: MPG or luxury?? if MPG, dont expect to find good MPGs on a 10 yr old heavy lexus. might be better looking at less dated, lower end brands cars with luxury options. i.e. galant w/ leather, heated seats, etc.

personally, i would look ~5-7 yr old tier two japanese brands - 4 cyl, w. luxury package. do you really want to the last owner of a 150k+ car to put only highway miles on it? sounds dangerous.

I would just stick with what you have, then. Buying a 3rd car doesn't seem worth it. Spending $6000 to save a tiny bit on gas? That doesn't make any sense.

its not a tiny bit when you are traveling through many states at once.

hmm good idea...tuff thing about researching is that EPA states one thing, but users will get very diferent results...def look into that one

but so far....99 2.3 CL/ 2003 camry solara/ 2001 g20

all have almost the same EPA MPG rating with the solara being the leader in luxury, than the g20, followed by CL

although the solara might win this one since the reliability is exactly that of a camry.

You may get close to 28 mpg with the I30, but the only way you are getting 30 mpg with the I35 is if it is being towed or you are driving 45 mph constantly down hill.

It does have a mighty VQ engine, and it is reliable and pretty luxurious though. But you may have to spend a bit more than $6000 for a good one.

I think you are going to have to look at a Camry or an Altima.

How much do you REALLY plan on using this car?

If you drive 20000 miles a year with it and you get 30 mpg, at $3.00 a gallon you will spend about $2000 in gas a year. At 25 mpg. which is less than you will get with your current cars, you will spend about $2400 a year.

20000 miles is a lot more than I think you will be driving. And $3.00 a gallon is more than most people pay.

Is $400 a year worth spending $6000 for a car that you are stretching to get. I say stretching because it is a low budget and you are trying to get a luxury car, that you will spend a fair amount of time in, so I assume safe and comfort are both important. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Also, $400 that you save in gas will probably cover 60% of the increase in insurance for the extra car.

my 99 es300 gets an average of 22-23. Sometimes i get 24-25 if i am not hammering the gas pedal. These are fairly inexpensive. i would say a 99-01 would fit your price range.

things that typically go wrong with these are the o2 and MAF sensors and the rear "charcoal" canister.
The displays on the radio bleed, so you either have to replace the screen, radio or replace with an aftermarket.

otherwise it has been a great car to me. Bought mine with 70k and it now has 151k exactly 4 years later.

i just base my info on my old car, a 2000 maximas mpgs. it had the vq30 but i got about 30mpg highway. my dads 05 maxima did about 28 mpg highway so i figured the i35 would fair a bit better. you own one though so id imagine you know better. are they not highway warriors like the tl/cl??

another suggestion for the OP would be a 98-01 altima GLE. not the best looker, but they do make them with leather, and they come with a decent performing 2.4 engine that does get great mpg's. another reliable choice as well. even a 4th gen maxima equipped with leather is an awesome choice (i have a brand new car and still want one) haha.

I think you have too many requirements, if you want luxury then pay a little more, if you want great mileage, pay less and get an older civic si. VW might not be a bad choice either, the jettas and passats were pretty cool back in the day.

The rev a lot higher than the Hondas. They do not tend to be the greatest when it comes to MPGs. The I30 and I35 are really not rated to get more than 24. That's not entirely correct since I will get 26+ if I do all highway. When I had my CL fully modded, I would get close to 30 with my best being almost 32.
