Started my garage remodel project today
It’s a great garage, but it’s HOT in the summer and COLD in the winter.
Insulation on the sides and roof should help take care of that.
Once again, Shawn the cheapskate decides to do it himself and save a couple of hundred bucks.
Here are a few “before” pictures:
It’s a basic Post & Frame building with a metal skin.
No insulation except for 1/2” on the roof.

He…He… I think I have more A/V equipment in my garage then some people have in their LIVING ROOM.

BEEP…BEEP…BEEP…Here comes the Lowe’s truck.

Two piles of insulation and one stack of Drywall

That’s a LOT of foam. 1/2” and 1” for the walls and 2” for the ceiling.
Watching the NASCAR race in the background

Another pile of foam on the way

Here comes the drywall

Oops…Just noticed. It’s the WRONG STUFF !!!
Supposed to be the green moisture resistant stuff I ordered.
Luckily I told the guy before he left.
They have to come back tomorrow, pick this up and re-deliver the correct stuff.

Spent about 4-Hours. Got most of one wall done with insulation.

Pile went down a bit, but not much.

Guess the wife won’t be parking HERE tonight.

The Blinger wants to come back inside

To be continued........

Nice, cant wait to buy my house when I grow up. I'm project man already, I cant imagine life when I actually have something that appreciates to throw that effort in to.
BTW, did the lowes man think you were a freak for taking pictures of him unloading the material?

Very light. The 2” thick sheets only weigh about a pound.
Two slices with a utility knife and it’s cut through.
I didn’t want to go drywall on the roof because I’m not sure the trusses were designed for that kind of load.
Drywall will be on the sides only.

We had a similar problem with our garage and front of the house last year. No problem with the cold in the winter here in LA, but it got really freakin hot in the summer. The garage had no insulation or ventilation. Add to that the parked cars that came in from the summer heat, the garage was like 130 degrees.
We pretty much went the same route as you. Insulation boards in key places, as well as beneath the drywall. It was pretty fun.

Shawn are you adding the insulation to the garage doors too? Didn't know if you had them, but that foam works wonders when attached to regular uninsulated garage doors. Helps keep the noise down too.

Should be no need to add any more there.
man that's not being cheap, which i am too, that is being careful with your $$$. if you have the skills to do it or at least the general knowledge, it's fun.
don't you love how they always manage to screw up an order?

I was originally going to put this project off until fall, but the last two weekends it rained and I was unable to do my planned OUTSIDE yard work.
So I decided to order my materials so I can work in there if it’s raining outside or a few hours each evening.
As soon as I have enough of the product up on the walls to get the wife’s RAV4 back in the garage, I’ll be working on other OUTSIDE projects if the weather is nice.

That block wall you see in this picture was built by me and the wife two years ago.
I got estimates from four contractors that ranged from a low of 4,000 to a high of 5,800.
We built it with 800 dollars worth of material and only TWO WEEKENDS worth of labor.
And I’ve gotten tons of comments on how good it came out.

So they rescheduled for Sunday.
Sunday is a regular delivery day for Lowe’s.
YES, I was surprised too.
Looks like fun. If you haven't hung drywall before, the garage is a good place to learn.
And in case you didn't know, that foil on the insulation will help keep the aliens from reading your mind!

looks good... whats the deal with your wires just hanging there ^^^ is that just some ghetto splice that you never finished stapling? or is it messed up and you haven't fixed it yet? I bet an inspector would love seeing that
just kidding, looks good though
(and good job on the block wall, too)

just kidding, looks good though There were three 8FT LG fluorescent lights down the center of the garage hanging on chains.
I took them down temporarily so I could do the ceiling panels easier.
I just capped off the “HOT” wires so I don’t zap myself if I accidentally turn the switch on.

Once the land was cleared, it went up in only THREE DAYS !!!
Much quicker then a “stick built” garage and at nearly half the price too.
Definitely check with your city or township before you build.

I've seen it get up to R8 I think... But that stuff is 3-4 inches thick.
My guess is he'll see maybe R5...

Both of them together come out to about R12 if I remember correctly.
The 2” on the roof is nearly R14 I think.
I’ll double check tonight so I’m not giving false info.
When the wife came home from work Saturday, my one friend was over and we were discussing adding-on 8-10FT to the back of the garage so I can pull a Vette in there next year.
She wasn’t amused and thought I was joking.
Maybe I was…Maybe I wasn’t.
