Acura can’t build a Tranny, but GM can’t glue a roof

Check out my latest “MOD” to the vette.
Blue duck tape across the windshield to hold the roof on.
The glue that holds the composite roof to the metal frame is delaminating and they’re flying off Vette’s left and right.
Luckily I found the problem before mine went flying while driving.
And I was able to find some blue duck tape so it looks somewhat respectable.
I can still drive it while I’m waiting for the replacement top to arrive.
That could be a few weeks until it comes in.

Looks like GM is recalling about 35,000 of these from the 2005 & 2006 model years.

Beautiful isn’t it ???

That sucks, but at least GM is doing a recall...

Guess that they decided that the TSB wasn't enough:

you should stick some of that tape going the length of the car to imitate a racing stripe...then it would look cool.

GM is doing a really shitty job at handling this, the Vin's w/ in the recall are a very small # of cars losing their roofs, they need to do a recall on ALL the cars.

Shit is really going to hit the fan for GM when one of the roofs flies off and kills someone.

That's not that smart using glue to hold that piece. A bolt or rivits would make more sense.

Fuck That….It’s summertime and I’m driving it.
I’m not gonna drive the Subaru if it’s sunny and 90-degrees out.
400 Horsepower w/ duck tape is better then 175 without.

How exactly do you propose to attach a 1/16” thick piece of plastic and not see the bolts ???

I'm just over 5,200 miles on the thing and so far (knock on wood) this has been the only problem.

No idea, didn't know it was that thin. Just seems like a crap job to use glue. I'm sure GM could have worked something better.

glue is just fine. it just seems they got the wrong blend of it, or arent putting it in the right place. They are suing glue now to bond body panels and structures together. in many cases the glue is stronger than the bolts and welds they would use

This is GM. Their UAW QA guy probably went on one of his union-mandated 3 hour lunch breaks.

how hard is it to secure a roof.... they have been making corvettes for decades... some of them were even T tops and convertibles... and they dont have enough expereince to make a roof secure??

They can build a engine but they cant keep the roof from flying off......

In the defense of GM, the C5 didnt have this problem. Supposedly it is adhesion failure. GM doesnt design the glue they use. At least they are fixing the problem.

no, but when i took my cousin's C5 to the touchless carwash for him, water streamed down from the tops where the roof panel and A-pillars meet (both A-pillars). I checked the roof afterwords to make sure it was installed correctly...it was...the rubber sealing just wasn't tight/thick enough at the corners.

not a trickle of water, mind you...think of getting a sports-bottle with water and turning it upside down and giving it a light squeeze.

Instead of using 0-60 times to promote the Vettes they should start using stats like: 'Goes from hardtop to convertible in 0.1 seconds!'

Sorry to see your baby all bandaged up...I feel you GM pain w/ my CTS-V.

Thats crazy, and Knock on wood, i havent had any leaks with the t-tops on my Trans Am. One thing i do is keep all the weather stripping nice and soft by using silicone spray.
