ok seriously though its good to hear some positives about Vista and its also good that you can turn all the bloatware off. Seeing how its the only option at most sites now, I guess there really is no other choice, unless of course you buy your pc, format, and install XP. :P

AMD x2 3800+

Perhaps I can do a tweak guide for Vista.

My best guess is that my tweaks would take about 20 minutes and its mostly just fiddling around with the services.

i'll update to vista...i just don't know when.

i bought a new laptop last month, and i was eligible for a free copy of vista. so hopefully i'll get one soon. who knows how long.

i don't really do any gaming either.

Same here, but it's slower on my machine... granted I'm on a lappy with only 1 gig RAM. But I'll take the temporary added feeling of security for the laggy speed (WITHOUT having to learn a new operating system -- linux/MacOS/FreeBSD etc etc).

Any one try the ReadyBoost and care to comment?

I posted a review done professionally on gaming in vista. I love what Ken has to say, but he probably hasn't actually benchmarked anything. He's going by the seat of his pants.

The O/S is seriously lacking right now... All of the benchmarks show it. And video drivers are way behind, as with most of Vista drivers.

If you aren't a die hard windows user you probably won't notice it. But if you play FPS shooter games and or use any major CPU intensive apps I'd hold off. Go and read the review I posted. I even quoted the article... Google for Vista benchmarks you'll find plenty of them...

I don't have time to beta test stuff for Microsoft... maybe some of you do. But I certainly won't pay to do it...

Again, if your just surfing the web and buring CDs, listening to MP3s/movies... go for it...

True. If Vista is slower on games than XP, I dont notice it.

I agree with most of this but you don't necessarily have to give up one for the other, just partition your drive install both OS's on it and with this dual-boot setup you'll be able to experience the best of both worlds.

From the article that you linked the guys final conclusion were that bad. And it looks like he was using a balls to the wall system. One that gamers would buy.

ya, he said he would tell any gamer to think twice about running out and installing it because gamer performance isn't there yet. In fact he recommends AGAINST it.

As I said, Video drivers aren't there yet... Nvidia is way behind for Vista. Lots of manufacturers aren't ready for Vista yet. Their XP stuff is much better.

In 6-9 months most of these issues will be gone... and Vista should be better than XP. I hope so anyway... lol

Yeah, Nvidia is really behind. The ATI drivers (surprisingly) are quite good.

I'm just thinking about Dan original question. He didn't go into it, but I don't think he was buying a gaming system. And a new system with Vista wouldn't be so bad.

That's kinda ironic since ATI doesn't even have a video card out that supports DX10... but yeah I've stuck with ATI cards for over 5 years and I'm not about to switch... Nvidia is simply inferior
