Acura TSX: How to Replace Alternator

This article will walk you through the process of replacing that dead alternator to get your TSX moving again.

This article applies to the Acura TSX (2004-2014).

Your car's alternator plays a vital role in supplying power to the battery, keeping it charged while the car is running and helping to supply steady power to all the car's electronics. Some warning signs of a failing alternator include dimming lights, a warning light, a constantly weak or dead battery, and various odd sounds coming from underneath the hood. If your alternator has decided to kick the proverbial bucket, here's how to replace it yourself and save some money in the process.

Materials Needed

  • 10, 12, and 14mm socket and ratchet
  • New alternator

Step 1 – Remove the alternator

Before you begin, disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and wrench.

  • Use a 14mm socket to release the belt tensioner until the alternator belt comes off.

  • To get enough room to pull the alternator out, grab the power steering reservoir and lift it straight up. You can also disconnect the electrical connector from the fan shroud to make some more room if needed.
  • Once these are out of the way, lift the alternator out of the car.

Step 2 – Install new alternator

  • Carefully set the new alternator back in place and reinstall the bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors for the cooling fan (if you removed it) and the alternator.
  • Slide the power steering reservoir back in place.
  • Install the belt back on the alternator pulley and tighten the belt tensioner until there is no slack in the belt.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the car and check your battery voltage to ensure the new alternator is working properly.

  • Install the new alternator, bolts, and reconnect the wiring.
