Acura MDX: Aftermarket Wheels Review

Love your MDX but tired of its same old look? Refresh the exterior with a new set of aftermarket wheels.

By Bryan Wood - May 12, 2016

This article applies to the Acura MDX.

The Acura MDX is an SUV that handles and looks much better than your typical 4 x 4 right from the factory, but you can still stand out from the crowd with some custom alloy rims. Unfortunately, there really are not a ton of options that fit the MDX specs. 1st generation owners have an especially tough time, with a 5 x 114.3mm bolt pattern, 64mm center hole, and 35-55mm offset, but luckily Acura went back to that spec for the 3rd generation, meaning more wheels are now available.

If you have a 2nd generation MDX, you have plenty of option though, including the wheels from the 2010 to 2015 Chevy Camaro, and the Acura ZDX, as well as aftermarket companies. All 2nd gen MDXs use a 5 x 120mm bolt pattern, 64mm center hole, and 35-45mm offset. You can search Google and the online forums for more information, but we've collected six of the most popular options for the 2nd generation MDX right here, so read on for a short overview before you start shopping.

MDX Advance Wheels

Price – $250

Size – 19-inch

Weight – Okay

Quality – OEM

Finish – Silver painted aluminum alloy

One of the easiest ways to get plus sized rims, and a different look, is to visit the parts department of your dealer, or shop online for a set of the 19-inch rims, which came stock on Acura MDX models with the top of the line Advance package. You know these rims will fit perfectly, and if they are used, the TPMS sensors will be included and work. Even direct from the factory they retail for less than $300 each, and you can often find them online for less, as used or new car take offs. Use the money you save on the rims to get them chrome plated, or a custom powder coat finish applied. Pair these with a 255/50R19 tire if you are using the narrower 8-inch wide rims, or even a 275/45R19 on the wider 9-inch rims. Best for MDX owners just looking for a larger diameter wheel without spending too much money.

ZDX 19-inch Wheels

Acura ZDX 19 Rims

Price – $250

Size – 19-inch

Weight – Okay

Quality – OEM

Finish – Alloy with machined face

The Acura ZDX was based on the same underpinnings as the MDX, so these rims bolt right up as easily as the stock one, because they are factory parts too. Acura offered the ZDX with 18, 19 and 20-inch rims, and we'll cover the 20-in rims below. The 19-inch rims are a raw aluminum allow, with machined faces on the seven spokes. These rims are just as inexpensive as the MDX rims from the dealer, though they can be a little harder to find used, and may not be sold new much longer. The factory recommended tire for these is a 255/50R19. Best for MDX owners looking for a slightly different look from the rest of the crowd, but on a budget.

Acura ZDX 20-inch Wheels
Acura ZDX 20" alloy rims

Price – $250

Size – 20-inch

Weight – Heavy

Quality – OEM

Finish – Aluminum

Just like the 19-inch rims above, this is another Acura factory option. The Acura ZDX had a 10 spoke wheel in both 18 and 20-inch sizes, but on a vehicle as big as the MDX, the 20-inch is really the way to go. The only drawback to these great looking rims is that they weigh quite a bit more than the 18 or 19 inch factory rims. Acura makes them extra strong to avoid damage and warranty claims. The factory tires size is a 255/45R20.

5th Generation Camaro SS Wheels

Acura MDX with Camaro SS rims

Price – $450

Size – 20-inch

Weight – Heavy

Quality – GM OEM

Finish – Alloy with machined face

The 5th generation Camaro used wheels that are almost a direct bolt on for the 2nd generation Acura MDX. You do need to use hubcentric rings to narrow the 67mm Chevy rim center hole down to the Acura 64mm size, and add Acura TPMS sensors. The great thing about the Camaro wheels is that they are OEM quality, and often can be found for sale barely used, from owners who upgraded their Camaro when new. They are heavy, just like all OEM 20-inch rims, and the open face 5-spoke design will show off your small factory brakes, but they do look great. The recommended tire would be the same as on the ZDX 20" rims. Best for people looking for a custom style wheel with OEM quality, and at a low price.

RonJon Inspyre Type II

Acura MDX on RonJon Inspyre II 20" rims

Price – $415

Size – 20-inch

Weight – Lightweight

Quality – Better than OEM

Finish – Graphite or black with machined face

RonJon is not only a frequent poster on AcuraZine, one of the owners actually drives an MDX, so they ought to know which rims work well on it. The Inspyre rims are lightweight for a 20-inch rim, and are at least as good as OEM rims in quality. You will pay more than the factory rims, but that is to be expected for quality allow rims like these 255/45R20. Recommended for its quality.

TSW Nurburgring

Price – $250-500

Size – 17-22-inch

Weight – Okay

Quality – Okay

Finish – Machined alloy, matte grey, or matte bronze

These rims are not expensive and give you quite a few options in finish and size. Forum members like the low price and the option of using a factory 18-inch size, or up-sizing to 20-inch or even better. The matte bronze finish really looks great with the factory pearl white paint, and the matte gray goes great with everything. Best choice for those who want a truly custom wheel at a low price and are not concerned with quality.
