Acura RDX: How to Change Differential Fluid
The rear differential fluid is one of the most overlooked maintenance items in the Acura RDX. Read on to learn how to replace it yourself.
This article applies to the Acura RDX (2007-2016).
The differential fluid in the Acura RDX doesn't need to be replaced until 30,000 miles, but it is important that you don't forget about it. A lot of people who are used to FWD vehicles totally overlook the rear differential fluid when moving to an all-wheel drive vehicle. Failing to replace the differential oil will lead to the rear end making noises, and eventually the SH-AWD system not working properly. This guide will show you how to replace the rear differential fluid in your Acura RDX on your own.
Materials Needed
- Drain pan
- 3/8 ratchet with extension
- Fluid transffer pump
- Differential fluid
Step 1 – Drain differential fluid
With the car parked on level ground, place the drain pan under the rear differential. Both drain and fill plugs can be accessed through holes in the subframe, and can be turned with a 3/8" drive extension with no socket. Before removing the drain plug, loosen the filler plug to make sure you can refill it, and to let the fluid drain faster. Remove the drain plug, and let it drain into a pan.
Step 2 – Fill with fresh fluid
Clean the magnet on the back, install the drain plug and tighten back in place, then use your fluid pump to pump fluid in through the fill plug. Continue to fill it until it starts to drip out.
Step 3 – Install the fill plug
Once done pumping fluid, replace the fill plug.
